I'm also not sure about the 'rocks'...mostly because I'm not sure if they ARE rocks!
My biggest critism tho is that your not gonna finish it!!!.....now I'll never know why that little guy looks so morose.

Yes flatness is a problem I’m constantly working on.
I actually based the rocks off of a place I like to go near where I grew up in California. Here’s the source photo I used.
